One of the main sources of reusable water is stormwater, which is water that originates from precipitation events, such as rainfall and snowfall. Managed through rain harvesting systems provided by different companies, stormwater enters the waterways when it does not soak into the ground. It then becomes stormwater runoff, which flows either directly into waterways or into storm sewers. These then eventually discharge to surface waters. Unfortunately, as it flows down impervious surfaces, it accumulates different elements that can turn into pollutants and give rise to stormwater pollution.

Stormwater Pollution

Stormwater pollution occurs when pollutants, such as trash and motor oil from a car, combined with stormwater runoffs. These stormwater runoffs flow into storm drains that carry rainwater into different bodies of water.

Stormwater pollution has two main characteristics: quantity and severity. Quantity refers to the amount of pollutants present in stormwater runoffs. Severity, on the other hand, refers to the effects of stormwater pollutants. Their chemical nature, concentration, and persistence determine the severity.

There are different factors that affect stormwater pollution. Some of these factors can be:

- The level of vegetation cover

- The cleanliness of the streets

- The local practices, such as street sweeping, pet control, and garden watering.

Stormwater Pollution Types

There are four main types of stormwater pollution: natural pollution, sediment pollution, chemical pollution, and litter. Natural pollution consists of pollutant, such as fallen leaves, garden clippings, and animal droppings. Sediment pollution consists of pollutants like sediments from soil erosions or from stormwater runoffs, originating from building sites and unsealed roads. Chemical pollution consists of pollutants, such as soap, scum, and oily grit, produced by activities like washing a car. Litter consists of pollutants, such as cigarette butts, cans, plastic bags, and pieces of paper.
